Across the Universe

In today’s procrastination, I started watching ‘Across the Universe‘… one of the many movies in the 140GB (yes thats right, there was no mistake in that figure) worth of movies and tv shows I downloaded in my Monday night procrastination. I gotta say though, this movie is brilliant. For those who don’t know it, it’s the based on the musical of the same name using all the Beatles songs. It’s based around a small group of friends during the revolutionary time of the Vietnam war and hippy era in America.

I think what I like about it is that for once, none of the singers are annoyingly bad, but not only that – they actually do the whole thing artistically. It’s not just a plain jane movie. Now if you’re dealing with an era drowning in drugs and free loooooove, there’s bound to be some psychadelic crazy scenes, but this movie doesn’t just do that, it has a completely artistic side to it, at times reminding me of the montage style used in monty python…. like that but on serious drugs screwing it up haha.

The clip at the very top is one of my fauurite scenes because of how well it is shot and the beauty of the cinematography playing a big part of the clip (specfically from around 30 seconds till 1.20 mins). I also kind of have a draw to gospel singing (although not necessarily the songs they sing… but singing the beatles works so well here…)

The clip directly below is an example of  the montaging that they do (for the scene of  strawberry fields – specifically from around 2.30 mins). There’s a crazier clip than this which is just plain psycho seeing as it also involves them on drugs and at a “circus”. But this ones just cool. Below that is how they do the musical scenes – I love this one and it’s probably my favourite scene just because of how well it works. I think they do it bloody well for the drafting of the brother (the blonde guy). Actually they do a really do a really job with the whole war side of things.

Anyways, if you have a spare moment, WATCH IT!

Quote of the Week #27

There is now only four days remaining until Dom leaves. Four.

And I don’t even get to spend them all with him. Not that I could be that selfish anyway. He has other people in his life as well. I get to spend the last night with him before he leaves and that’s going to be bloody well hard enough.

“It’s been said that we just don’t recognise the significant moments of our lives while they’re happening. We grow complacent with ideas or things or people, and we take them for granted. And it’s usually not until that thing is about to be taken away from you that you realise how wrong you’ve been, that you realise how much you really need it, how much you love it.”

– Nathan (One Tree Hill)

Now whilst I know I’m supposed to be staying positive at this point in time, it’s getting harder and harder. After all, I’m about o lose the guy that I’ve loved for the past three and a half years. I suppose I should be happy at least for him in stead of only thinking about my own certain misery to come. He’s finally getting out of this city and going to see the world which is what he’s always wanted – it’s what he’s dreamed of for so long. I should be happy for him for that. I just can’t help wallowing in the fact that I’m about to lose him.

(And yes, I know this is the second week in a row that I’ve used a quote from One Tree Hill, but I gotta say, they do actually have some really good quotes on there despite being your typical teenage drama show on TV. I gotta give them some kudos. And this quote could apply in a million different situations. It fits mine, but chances are it could fit yours too…)

Quote of the Week #26

This week comes with a couple of quotes. I couldn’t decide the better one, hence I included them both. Now whilst admittedly, I did get one of them from One Tree Hill (don’t judge me!), it still fits in perfectly so I’m not holding its point of origin against it (and neither should you).

‘Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future for it is yet to come. Live in the present and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.’

– Ida Scott Taylor

“Every song ends, but that’s no reason not to enjoy the music.”

– Peyton (One Tree Hill)

The point of this weeks quotes though is as everyone would be well aware, there been almost a kind of depressing countdown until the day that Dom leaves (the 27th which is fast approaching). It’s a week and a half away now and he keeps telling me not to think about it, but sometimes it’s hard. But I think that’s where the first quote kicks in and says it all.

And the second quote is along the same lines but more of a reflection of the relationship – despite knowing it had a certain end around this time, we still decided to go ahead with it six and a half months ago on that first night I saw Dom again. It’s funny, because that night seems like yonkers ago and I almost feel as though I was a naive kid at that point. As though I’ve wisened since then or something. But let’s face it, I probably haven’t. It’s just that a lot has happened since then and I’ve learnt a lot. And I’m glad of it. If I had a choice of doing this all over again and knowing that I would have to say goodbye to Dom again, I’d still do it – it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

Quote of the Week 14

French is my favourite – fantastic language, especially to curse with. Nom de Dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperie de connard d’encule de ta mere! [Translation: Name of God of whore of brothel of shit of filth of fucking your mother up the ass.] You see, it’s like wiping your ass with silk, I love it.”

– Merovingian (The French Guy) – The Matrix Reloaded –

This is this week’s Quote of the Week seeing as French is constantly on my mind at the moment… however, that’s usually because I’m feeling guilty about my lack of attention to it when I really should be focusing on it a lot harder seeing as a lot balances on me at least passing the unit this semester. It screws up a lot of plans if I don’t pass it. But we shall see. It would probably help if I at least started going to my classes, let alone actually tried studying for a bit at home. It’s not one of those subjects that you can ignore all semester and then cram for in study week (which is what I do for every other subject I ever do).

This quote at least shows the fun side of French. It’s pure brilliance if you ask me. 😀
